After some days of low blood counts, we finally see some positive progress. Neutrophils remain very low though. However we now have a new problem. Vicki's body has not been holding onto the platelets that have been given to her, so the consultant ordered some tests to work out why. The results of the tests indicate that Vicki's immune system is attacking the donated platelets. On the one hand, this is a normal immuno-response, but of course, it isn't helping her health. The way to deal with this is by getting the platelets to be transfused better matched to Vicki's own to trick her body into not attacking them. Of course this makes this a little harder!
Nevertheless, overall the mood is positive news. We've even heard vague talk of Vicki coming home for a little while, though I have to say, nothing concrete. The uncertainty weighs heavy as Vicki outwardly is quite well. She can't wait to get back to some normality, see her friends, sleep in her own bed, and experience life beyond the confines of the Royal Infirmary.
Vicki remains quite tired, and her appetite is far from normal, but her weight remains stable so there's no real concerns on this front. I'm more concerned about the times that she gets hungry, because you have a very limited choice in food at 11:45 at night! Mind you, it's quite easy to get a parking space at the hospital then!
