The quest for Kentucky

Vicki is still progressing well. We spent some time in the day room, and chatted for hours. It was a lot like having my old Vicki back. We played Newmarket for some chips that I'd found in the toy cupboard. We watched the X-Factor and bemoaned the Twins STILL being in the contest. Ahhh, happy days.

As the evening drew on, Vicki wanted some Popcorn Chicken from KFC. So having Googled a couple of KFCs in the vicinity, I found a weakness with our reliance on the Internet. Unlike Burger King's web site which offer details of opening times, KFC's did not. So, yes you guessed it, when I arrived at KFC it was shut. Then I found a weakness with my reliance on the Sat Nav on my phone. Firstly it wouldn't pick up the satellites so I didn't know accurately where I was, and secondly, the usually reliable "find my nearest" suggested the nearest KFC was 4 miles away. A little far to walk.

Eventually, due to my tenacity in not wanting to let Vicki down, I found another branch of KFC that was open. However, the front door was shut, but I noticed that the Drive-Thru was open. So I joined the queue of cars on foot and waited my turn. When I arrived at the window, the assistant looked me up and down and asked where my car was. I jumped back startled, and shouted "Oh my God, where's it gone, you can't trust anyone round here..." Not sure if she saw the funny side of this.

Having obtained the aforementioned chicken I made my way back to the hospital. A round trip of about 75 minutes. But boy it was worth every second to see the look of delight on Vicki's face when she started eating it.

This morning, now free of her usual array of wires and tubes, we borrowed a wheelchair and went for a wander. I showed Vicki the sights that had become so familiar to me over the last 4 weeks. The canteen, the cash point, WH Smith and so on. Then we went where Vicki's not been for 4 and half weeks. Outside. I tried my best to time this foray into the real world with Tracey's arrival, and sure enough, just as we got to the car park, Tracey pulled up. So there we all were, outside. It's funny how the simplest things can make you happy.
