The foothills of the recovery mountain

After Vicki's blood transfusion and platelets yesterday, today we see a little colour return to her cheeks. Her blood counts are starting to look a little better. She is still quite tired, and although she's eating, she's not quite back to eating normally. Her consultant is pleased with her progress and that her treatment is going according to plan. As ever there are no guarantees, and many hurdles left to negotiate. The Hickman line is always an infection risk, and of course her future chemotherapy will leave her immune system compromised.

As she continues to make steady progress you start to become more aware of the plight of those around you, and the harshness of their conditions makes you realise that we still have a lot to be thankful for. We are looking at a 4 - 8 month treatment plan, after which, assuming it has been a success, things should return to normal for Vicki. There are other patients here who are on treatment plans of at least 2 years, where even a successful outcome in terms of the cancer will leave the patient will some form of disability. The world is harsh cruel place, and it makes you wonder how any of us survive in it sometimes.

  1. Yes Ben's treatment plan is 3 1/2 years!!!!!! With no guarantess and still have to wait three years after that for the all clear. That is 6 1/2 years!! And yes as everyone says a small price to pay for still being with us - but how about considering a lost childhood? - actually three lost as siblings also go through hell!!
People say how do you cope? But really there is no choice!!
Best wishes to you all from Anita XX
